Encompassing the 9,000 acres that comprised the Elgin Settlement established by Rev. William King in 1849, the museum site includes a restored 1861 schoolhouse and an 1866 church and cemetery. It is one of the few remaining African Canadian settlements still in existence from the pre-civil war era.
